Luke Byars is one of South Carolina’s most experienced political and government affairs strategists, with more than three decades of experience working alongside the state’s top policymakers, candidates, and business leaders. Over the course of his career, Luke has advised and managed hundreds of successful local, state, and federal campaigns, earning a reputation for disciplined strategy, political instinct, and consistent results.
Luke joined First Tuesday Strategies as a Partner in 2011 and became a Senior Partner in 2018. Prior to joining FTS, he served as State Director and Campaign Manager for U.S. Senator Jim DeMint from 2005 to 2010. Before that, Luke was Executive Director of the South Carolina Republican Party, where he oversaw an election cycle that resulted in an 85 percent win rate for Republican candidates statewide.
His government experience includes serving as Public Affairs Director for Lieutenant Governor Bob Peeler from 1998 to 2002 and as South Carolina’s State Taxpayer Rights Advocate and Business Ombudsman at the Department of Revenue from 1995 to 1998.
At the national level, Luke has held senior roles in presidential and party operations, including serving as State Director for Bob Dole’s 1996 presidential campaign and as Deputy Director of Voter Programs for the Republican National Committee from 1990 to 1993.
More recently, Luke has served as lead general consultant or senior advisor on some of South Carolina’s most high-profile and competitive races. He was the lead general consultant for William Timmons’ successful 2018 and 2024 congressional campaigns, senior advisor to U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham in 2014, 2020, and 2026, and senior advisor for U.S. Senator Tim Scott’s 2024 presidential campaign in South Carolina. He also served as senior advisor to Russell Fry’s 2022 congressional campaign, which defeated a five-term incumbent, and as chief strategist for Ellen Weaver’s victorious 2022 campaign for South Carolina Superintendent of Education.
In 2020 and again in 2024, Luke played a key strategic role for the South Carolina Senate Republican Caucus, helping unseat seven incumbent Democratic state senators and secure a Republican supermajority.
Luke resides in Lexington, South Carolina, with his wife, Drea. Together, they enjoy time with their three grown children and their newest family member—a baby granddaughter.
